It's interesting how badly Gore's "lockbox" strategy failed in Florida, the state he sought the most. Both over 60s and over 65s supported Bush over Gore at 51-47 and 52-46 respectively, and both were the age demographic most likely to support Bush. That was a huge swing from 1996, when the CNN exit poll reported Floridians over 60 voted for Clinton over Dole 50-42 and over-65s backed Clinton 55-38. While the shift can be somewhat explained (the deaths of GI Generation Democrats, Cuban backlash over Elian Gonzalez, Bush's appeal to rural Southerners) it doesn't explain all of it because over-65s also voted for Bill Nelson 53-47 in the Senate race that year. Gore was competitive in FL mostly because voters under 30 backed him over Bush  by a solid 55-40.
