Strange. The inflation rate was still quite high and there was an emerging consensus that government spending (and money printing by the Federal Reserve/an overly accommodative monetary policy) was the cause of the persistent high inflation, Jackson doubled down on both a high spending domestic and foreign policy (I recognize of course this was post Vietnam, in terms of foreign policy spending.)
Had he been elected President in 1976 of course his success would have depended on the fate of the Shah of Iran and whether there would have been an oil embargo, but if yes, I suspect the situation would have been so much worse than Carter that Teddy Kennedy would have defeated Jackson in 1980.
