I imagine if war was somehow avoided in 1899 the ZAR and OFS might have been drug into WWI. Probably just amounting to a nuisance for the British, once the war in Europe was over they would send larger numbers to South Africa and crush the Boers. In this scenario, its possible I think that with British attention divided elsewhere the Germans could have held on to Lake Tanganyika a bit longer and had a more drawn out East African campaign.
