I believe that Bayh is earnest (far too earnest to have ever succeeded on the national stage), and his retirement lacks any sort of ulterior agenda. Basically, he's pulling a Bill Bradley: "I give up. Just... just f*** it."

As for his future? If a Democrat is elected in 2016, he could be Ambassador to Indiana, I hear they love him there.
