Johnson/Weld, of course. These are pretty much mainstream American politicians.

LOL, no.  I'm voting for the guy, but libertarianism is, almost by definition, not mainstream.

Two former Republican office holders aren't within the political mainstream?

Honestly, in a sane world, the election would be Clinton vs. Johnson with Trump and Stein playing in the third party sandbox.

What does this even mean?

I think he mean to say "neither of them are especially authentic libertarians". Basically, he's saying that they aren't very extreme in their views.
