Harold Ford/ Russ Feingold (DEM) 2016-2024
In my dreams.  I'm a big Harold Ford fan.  He's a well reasoned centrist.  Those on the far right probably dislike him because he is left of center, and those on the far left probably dislike him because he's "tainting" the Democratic party with his moderate politics.  He's also very well spoken and presidential.  I hope you're right... we'll see.

To heck with Mitt... I want Bill Weld in there.  Is his unofficial ban from the Republican party removed now that Jesse Helms is gone?  :-)

What happened with Bill Weld and Jesse Helms? And wouldn't Weld be 70 or so by then.
Actually, he would be quite old by then.  But let's get him in sooner, then.  :-)

As for what happened between Helms and Weld... It was while Clinton was in office.  I forget the exact position Helms held, but it was something wherein he could block confirmations.  Clinton was attempting to appoint Weld to the post of Ambassador to Mexico.  Helms blocked the confirmation process because Weld was too soft on drug policy to be the U.S. Ambassador to Mexico.  Rather than get in a catfight with members of his own party, Weld graciously removed himself from consideration.  I was disgusted.  Anyone who lived in Massachusetts to see the fiscal mess Dukakis left us with (I lived in Massachusetts at the time) can truly appreciate how effectively Weld straightened things out.  Yes, I know, he leaves plenty for partisans on both sides of the aisle to whine about (fiscally conservative, socially liberal), but he was effective (and popular).

Incidentally, speaking of Weld... in case you're not aware, his name has been floated as a possible Senatorial appointment by Romney if Kerry wins in November!  It is UNLIKELY to happen (besides the fact that Kerry needs to win in November... a questionable prospect in the first place), but certainly COULD.

Yes.  So, how can he be a Senator from Massachusetts?  I'm not sure.  Let's ask Hillary.  :-)  Seriously, though, I'm not sure if he's still in NY... he went there shortly after losing his Senate bid versus Kerry, but I'm not sure if he's still there.  Plus, he may well still have a residence (and might even make his official residence) in Mass.
