No idea if someone pointed this out, but modern means of communication have existed for only so long. Moreover, I think it'd be safe to assume people in different time periods might react differently to certain types of speaking styles--the few that would hear these people speak. It's not as if addresses by George Washington or Julius Ceasar were seen by crowds of millions and heard across the nation on radios and television sets. One need not be charismatic back then like today, and vice versa. And given the disconnect in action between certain classes, charisma might mean only needing to convince a few close friends to mobilize their property. And of course, one need not write their own addresses.
