2010 Census 18+ population:
White 142
Black 2098
Hispanic 71
Asian 251
Native 8
Other 53
What is the source for these numbers?
DRA
It would help to know where the precinct is.
Minneapolis. Not too far from where I live.
Somehow, I had got the wrong precinct, or I might have switched to the census tract to get more data. I was concerned that DRA had got mixed up when Minneapolis was re-warded. 2-10 is not the same precinct as it was in 2008.
Particularly notable is that the White VAP is 142, and the White total population is also 142. That is, among 1061 under 18, zero are white (non-Hispanic). Either the white population is the last hangers on, or they are all college students. If they 142 are people living in the same house for the last 50 years, then there were more than 142 in 2008.
Within the census tract, Koreans were the largest Asian group, followed by Chinese and Vietnamese. Conceivably some personal votes for McCain. Maybe Somalians thought that Obama was from Kenya. Are the Ethiopians in Minneapolis Christian, and some might have been mistrustful of someone with a middle name of Hussein.
The precinct is now 6-3 and extends east of Cedar. In 2008 (election) and 2010 (census) it was the last piece of the downtown diagonal grid, and obviously not a swank area since they'd built I-35 cutting it off from the rest of the grid.
In 2012, it was Obama 1799, Romney 114. In 2013 it was Warsame 1105, Lillegren 84. An oddity was the extremely large share of absentee ballots in 2013. Citywide it was around 6%. In 6-3, it was over 50%. There may have been an effort to make sure they marked their ballot right.
So my guess is that the 2010 census did not accurately reflect the 2008 electorate, as the Somali population moves eastward, and more become citizens.
