Connally wasn't VP in 1975, Nelson Rockefeller was, By the By, and Connally would probably be acceptable to Reagen, so he probably wouldn't give a Primary Challenge.

2. Reagan would have primaried Connally; he was a former Democrat, and a key ally of Nixon, who Reagan also viewed as too liberal.

1. Fine then, I think the author worded it a bit wrong.

2. John Connally was to the right of Nixon on many respects, he wouldn't be too Liberal for Reagen.

This is in the "what-if" section. Shouldn't it be obvious?

And Connally would have been primaried. He may have been to Nixon's right, but he was still for Nixon, and Reagan was leading a crusade against the Nixon wing of the party.
