Round 11: January 3, 2008
The Iowa Caucuses

√ Rudy Giuliani Projected to Win the Iowa Caucuses

Iowa Caucuses: Republicans
√ Rudy Giuliani: 61.09% (34 Delegates)
Mark Sanford: 38.91%

"Rudy Giuliani -- wins the Iowa Caucuses as expected and predicted. All the polls showed him leading Mark Sanford and tonight he cruises to an easy win. Sanford did do better than expected, garnering almost 39 percent, but the polls predicted a comfortable Giuliani win and those numbers were on target. When the evening started it looked like maybe he might keep Giuliani under that 60 percent hurdle his campaign desperately wanted to hold - given all the polls have showed the President winning this in a walk. Well, he managed expectations tonight and soundly defeated his challenger by almost twenty-three points. Sanford needed a win tonight or at the very least he needed to pull the President down, that is not the case. Giuliani can check off the box tonight, he has won the Iowa Caucuses." -- Tim Russert.

"The race everyone has been watching intensely has been on the Democratic side. Howard Dean has long been the favorite for the caucuses, but lately we have seen the polls tightening, particularly with Evan Bayh who has been playing hard here in Iowa. Even a few days ago Former President Bill Clinton, who predicted that Hillary Clinton would not win Iowa cast doubts on a Dean win and tonight it looks a those the former President may have had his finger on the pulse of the state. It is too close to call." -- Tim Russert

Iowa Caucuses: Democrats (Too Close to Call)
Howard Dean: 26.2%
Evan Bayh: 24.9%
Hillary Clinton: 21.6%
Blanche Lincoln: 21.4%
John Kerry: 5.1%
Other: 0.9%

"We do project, however that John Kerry will finish fifth this evening. It is still a race for fourth place between Hillary Clinton and Senator Blanche Lincoln, but all eyes are on Howard Dean and Evan Bayh."

11:39 pm EST: √ Clinton Projected to Finish Fourth in Iowa

Dean and Bayh: Too Close to Call
Evan Bayh: 25.3%
Howard Dean: 25.2%
Blanche Lincoln: 21.9%
Hillary Clinton: 20.0%
John Kerry: 6.6%
Other: 0.9%

11:59 pm EST
Evan Bayh: 25.29%
Howard Dean: 25.28%
Blanche Lincoln: 21.74%
Hillary Clinton: 20.19%
John Kerry: 6.54%
Other: 0.90%

12:04 AM EST
Howard Dean 25.29%
Evan Bayh: 25.28%
Blanche Lincoln: 21.74%
Hillary Clinton: 20.19%
John Kerry: 6.54%
Other: 0.90%

12:51 AM EST PROJECTION: IT'S A DRAW! Howard Dean DECLARED WINNER IN IOWA CAUCUSES.

√Howard Dean: 25.30% (14)
Evan Bayh: 25.28% (14)
Blanche Lincoln: 21.74% (10)
Hillary Clinton: 20.19% (9)
John Kerry: 6.54%
Other: 0.89%

"Howard Dean has won a narrow victory in the Iowa Caucuses, but this race has now been opened up in a new way. Howard Dean, the favorite for Iowa. Even all the polls projected a win for Dean, but no one could have expected the result we're seeing tonight. Now the Bayh campaign and some Democratic operatives will tell you, there has been this building sense of momentum for the Bayh campaign. They've been really playing hard in Iowa for the start. For them this was it. This one is for all the marbles. An adviser told me earlier today they'd bet the farm on Iowa -- well it has paid off. It's a draw, essentially and now we go onto New Hampshire where this race will likely get even more interesting. " -- Tim Russert

New Hampshire Primary Poll: Republicans
Rudy Giuliani: 66%
Mark Sanford: 34%

New Hampshire Primary Poll: Democrats
Evan Bayh: 23%
Howard Dean: 22%
Hillary Clinton: 20%

Democratic Debate:
Concord, NH

Moderator: Tim Russert, Union Leader, WMUR 9

Governor Dean: Governor Dean, congratulation on your win, now what are the difference between you and your opponents. Generally you all agree on the same points and are committed to defeating President Giuliani, but why should voters in New Hampshire pick you to be President?

Senator Clinton: Senator, you've taken some heat in this campaign from your opponents and here you are. Fourth in Iowa, running strong in New Hampshire, how do you appeal to Democratic voters who may see your resume and like it, but are not passionate about your candidacy?

Senator Bayh: Senator Bayh, you've been critical of Governor Dean on some of his statements including taxes and healthcare, saying they are too extreme for the country. Are you out of step with your party or is Governor Dean?

Senator Lincoln: Senator Lincoln, question from one of our viewers at home: What is your greatest personal failing?

Senator Kerry: Senator Kerry, you are the junior Senator from neighboring Massachusetts and you're currently down in the polls. Question from the audience: Are you still a viable candidate and if I may follow up: why should Democrats nominate you over your fellow Democrats?

To all: Do you consider yourself or call yourself a liberal?

To all: Are each of you committed right here and now to supporting the eventual nominee whoever they maybe?

Round 12: January 7-8, 2008

The final stretch before the all important New Hampshire primary and the race for the Democratic Nomination couldn't be tighter! After a recount in the Iowa Caucuses, Howard Dean's first place victory was certified, but the polls in New Hampshire continue to show a tight contest between Dean and second place finisher in Iowa Evan Bayh. Hillary Clinton is polling strong at third, followed by Blanche Lincoln, who is pulling up the rear.

John Kerry announced his departure from the race a few days ago, throwing his support behind Dean, giving the Vermont Governor momentum as he makes his closing arguments. The candidates had a chance to face off in a final debate before the primary, hoping to sway those few undecided voters. Pundits gave high points to Dean and Bayh for their performances as well as to Clinton, who has assumed an underdog status in this race and could be the dark horse on primary day. "New Hampshire has always loved the Clinton and she is hoping to count on that with a win on Tuesday. It happened four years ago and she needs to repeat it again." -- James Pindell, WMUR 9.

On the Republican side President Giuliani continues to hold onto an impressive lead over Mark Sanford. Giuliani won another victory in the Republican Primary, with a second win in the Wyoming Caucuses. Giuliani trounced Sanford 61 percent to 39 percent. Sanford has looked to focus his efforts on the upcoming South Carolina Primary, where a win is essential for his campaign to survive. Current polls put Giuliani head 53 percent to 42 percent, but the race is tightening and Sanford is hoping his home state advantage will put him over the top.

Direct Election of the President? Coming Soon to a Ballot Box Near You

More states are taking up discussion of the proposed Popular Vote Amendment, the latest being Maine and Vermont. Pundits believe at the very earliest the measure could go into effect by the 2012 Presidential Election. The measure would abolish the electoral college system of electing the President and Vice President and replace it with a popular vote system. The short of it, the tickets that wins the most votes becomes President and Vice President of the United States. Efforts to abolish the electoral college began in earnest after the 2004 Presidential Election. In his victory, President Giuliani was elected with 307 electoral votes, compared to 195 electoral votes for Joe Biden, while winning a meager 36 percent of the vote, compared to Biden's 34 percent.

Pundits believe, despite the presence of two other candidates on the ballot this year, the race will be tighter between President Giuliani and the eventual Democratic nominee, with Larry Sabot offering his prediction of the popular vote winner, "Whoever wins, Giuliani or the Democrat, it'll be close, probably closer than last time, but I think the winner may squeak by with higher plurality, maybe 39 or 40 percent of the vote."

Polls continue to put Giuliani in the lead over his Democratic and third party challengers. The latest polling average put Giuliani up with 36 percent of the vote in a four man race.

Round 13: January 9-15, 2008

Iowa and New Hampshire Split!

The all important New Hampshire Primary, proved once more the people of New Hampshire are not in the business of rubber stamping the result of the Iowa Caucuses, at least on the Democratic side.  For the Republicans, President Giuliani cruised to a second impressive win nominating contest, third over all. The President, who attended a rally in New Hampshire Tuesday night called his win in New Hampshire a seal of approval from the voters.

To his credit, in light of the polls South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford wrote off the primary near the end of the campaign, focusing all his remaining energies and efforts on the South Carolina -- his home state and what all pundits declare is a must win for the South Carolina Governor.

New Hampshire Primary: Republicans 100% Reported
√ Rudy Giuliani: 67.9% (12)
Mark Sanford: 33.1%

New Hampshire Primary: Democrats 20% Reported
Evan Bayh: 27.77%
Hillary Clinton: 27.38%
Howard Dean: 26.99%

Evan Bayh: 26.58%
Howard Dean: 26.52%
Hillary Clinton: 26.49%
Blanche Lincoln: 18.74%
Other: 1.29%

However, on the Democratic side the race did not end early. While Giuliani was projected the winner immediately after the polls closed at 8pm, the Democratic race proved to be a nail biter. Iowa first place finisher and long time frontrunner Howard Dean was the early favorite to win the primary, and all the polls in recent days put the former Vermont Governor at the top of the pack, but as the results came in the prospects of a Dean romp diminished.

Right out of the gate, Blanche Lincoln finished fourth in the primary, while a three-way race for first waged on between Dean, Evan Bayh and Hillary Clinton, who benefited from a late surge in the all important state. The result would not be decided until after midnight.

New Hampshire Primary: Democrats 65% Reported

At 12:41 am, the AP projected Hillary Clinton the winner in the New Hampshire Primary, narrowly beating out Evan Bayh and Howard Dean. The Clinton victory jump started a dragging campaign, that many in the media and Democratic circles believed was finished. Despite her razor thin margin of 0.4 percent (the closest in New Hampshire's history) Clinton's campaign can project victory and re-energize her supporters heading into the next contests.

The surprise finish by Clinton illustrates the fluidity in the Democratic race, plus coupled with the narrow win by Dean in Iowa over Bayh -- it is a sure thing that this race will continue.

ROUND 2:
DEAN REQUESTS RECOUNT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE PRIMARY -- AFTER CLOSE VOTE

Results from NH Primary, January 8, 2008
√ Clinton: 26.43%
Dean: 26.39%
Evan Bayh: 26.35% (6)
Blanche Lincoln: 19.75% (4)
Other: 1.10%

Howard Dean is requesting a formal recount in the New Hampshire Primary, the second recount of the cycle, coming after Evan Bayh contested the narrow result in Iowa where Dean won by 0.1 percent. In New Hampshire the projected winner Hillary Clinton defeated Dean by 0.4 percent. Polls leading up to the primary showed Dean with a lead, but in the closing days the gap tightened, until a final poll on the eve before the primary put the race in a three-way tie between Dean, Bayh and Clinton.

Clinton, who stumbled in recent weeks benefited from a strong debate performance and late surge, which pundits believed contributed to her -- narrowly going over the top. The recount will likely begin within a few days.
