I believe for Washington's first term he did not choose a party. PBrunsel's right, he did not like the idea of political parties. However, his second term he ran as a Federalist.

That is what I am saying. My dispute is 1792, not 1789.

Yeah, 1792 Washington ran as a Federalist.

He was not a Federalist. He favored them, but he never chose to be nominated by them. He was not a member of the Federalist Party. Washington is our only partyless president.

PBrunsel, he ran as a Federalist in 1792. Maybe he wasn't a member of the party but he ran as their candidate and accepted their nomination in 1792.
