Washington taking up arms again?

In 1798 at the start of the Quasi-War, Adams offered Washington the rank of lieutenant general and the post of Senior Officer of the Army. However, he left most of the details of planning for a possible real war with the French to his subordinate Major General Alexander Hamilton (who also became Senior Officer of the Army upon Washington's death in 1799).  It's debatable whether he would have commanded in the field had a real war broken out, but he certainly did resume being an officer of the U.S.Army. Indeed, he was the only officer to hold the permanent rank of Lt. Gen. until Grant received the rank during the Civil War. (Winfield Scott received a brevet promotion to Lt. Gen. some years after the Mexican War, but never received it as a permanent rank.)
