As already pointed out, it's RFID, not GPS. At worst, the government might be able to track you as you go thru the lines at the airport, and certainly not everywhere you go. An aluminum foil coated sleeve is sufficient to stop it if you're paranoid. Furthermore, I think y'all are likely misinterpreting, and in some cases deliberately, what is meant by illegal tampering here. Making the chip inactive shouldn't get you prison time, and I challenge anyone to produce an example of that. Tampering with the chip so it gives out false data should be a crime.
