KickAss

That Lyndsy Fonseca girl is rather hot I have to say.

I saw that too. I was a little bit disappointed, it started out good but then didn't really deliver, imo.

Still, watching a little girl kill people with a smile on her face was fun and made up for a lot of deficiencies I suppose.

Life During Wartime

I wasn't aware this was basically a sequel to Happiness, despite a completely new cast. It worked pretty well in that regard, wasn't quite as disturbing as previous Solondz works though. Really there was no reason to release it unrated, it could've received an R easily. I'd recommend it only for fans of Solondz's work, any newcomers would probably find it boring and wouldn't recognize the many Happiness shoutouts.

Having watched Happiness, I greatly enjoyed it, but I'm something of a Solondz-fan. I wouldn't recommend seeing it without having seen Happiness though.

And, yeah, sort of tame by Solondz-standards.

Wild At Heart.

Cool, though maybe a bit over the top. I kind of liked seeing a more romantic side of Lynch though.

A Spanish horror movie called The Orphanage. I liked it a lot. Much more subtle than the American variety of horror movies that I am accustomed to.

That is indeed a pretty awesome horror movie.

Revolutionary Road

Really amazing, but incredibly sad.

I found it more depressing than good, to be honest. But it was worth the time, certainly.

Lesbian Vampire Killers. Man, that was awful.

Were you in a masochistic mood or summet?

I was with two friends, at someone's home with few choices and it was late. And the gay one pushed heavily for that movie. The reasons for this remain largely mysterious to me. And, no, none of that constitute valid excuses, I know.

A part of me wanted to be able to provoke people afterwards by telling them that I watched it. Which seems to have worked on at least one person here. Wink

(sadly, that benefit was not really worth actually watching it. Especially given the fact that I could have just pretended to have done so without actually doing it)

The King's Speech: simply excellent
Black Swan: crap, stupid and insane
Red: Slightly amusing but overblown typical American action movie
Somewhere: ... what to say... the worst movie I've ever seen? An awful and stupid movie which is badly edited and totally devoid of any kind of conflict or real plot. It seems like they filmed a bunch of random things in the life of a boring loser and forgot to put them together or edit them properly. Awful. Awful.

It's not badly edited, it's a style. You may not like that style, I suppose, but it was certainly intentional. I didn't find it to be great, but I enjoyed Somewhere quite a bit.

The Hurt Locker.  I greatly enjoyed it, what a fine movie.  But what does the title mean?

I assume it refers to the box the protagonist has with all the bomb stuff.

The Deer Hunter

First time watching this in its entirety. Too long but mostly very good. The first Russian Roulette scene is certainly a strong contender for most intense scene in cinema history.

Spooky. My most recent film as well (was my most recent when you posted this too).

And I more or less agree with you. (I also agree with what you said on Youth in Revolt).

Really, really racist though. Not that many Vietnam War films aren't, of course.

Right. I'm not hugely bothered by that particular sort of racism though, to be honest.

I'm pretty sure racism was a big factor in the Vietnam War, as it is in all conflicts where different civilizations clash. The RR scenes are controversial though because apparently there are no official reports of anything like that happening during the war.

Yeah, I read that as well. What I meant was more that when you describe a war from the perspective of a personal story of a participant and he only meets a few enemies and those enemies are evil...it just doesn't bother me to the extent that it perhaps should. As long as it isn't the focus of the story and so on.

Rainman

All right, but 80s movies...for some reason I tend to not feel too involved in movies from the 80s. Probably the worse decade in movies (although there are good ones, obviously)

Most of my favorite 80s movies don't even really take place in the 80s (Raiders, Empire, Aliens, The Untouchables, Back to the Future). I'd say the Breakfast Club is probably my favorite 80s 80s film.

And I found the Breakfast Club to be pretty overrated. So, yeah.

King's Speech. Solid, but I wasn't THAT impressed. Probably the weakest  out of the BP nominees that I've seen.

Das Leben der Anderen, for the second time. Was slightly drunk this time, which did wonders for it. I lose my cynicism when I drink and for a horribly romantic and sentimental film that definitely enhances the experience.

Probably my least favourite of the Best Picture nominees I've seen so far. Still pretty good.

That one felt like shameless Oscarbait to me.  So did the King's Speech, but I liked it a lot more.  Not sure why.

The King's Speech was definitely Oscarbait, but did a good job of it. The Kids was just, I don't know...I felt like I've seen this kind of film many times before and that this wasn't that original. Basically.

The King's Speech.

Did not approve of some of the language, but overall a very good movie, intriguing story line, brilliantly acted.

Historically factual.

Actually, there were some major aspects of it that weren't correct in that regard.

Which ones? The one that struck as the most obvious was the depiction of Churchill as supporting the King, whereas in reality he damaged his political career immensely by being solidly behind Edward VIII.

Looking at that list, the one I mentioned seems to be the only really grave one. The others are pretty understandable and more minor.

That was basically the judgment of the article as well, of course. I think more questionable is making a film about Britain in the thirties and making it about that.

Oh. That's some class analysis. I see your point, but on the other hand I'm willing to grant artistic license on that issue.

Videodrome.

Pretty disturbing but a cool experience and eerily prophetic.
