That the South was in favour of slavery and the North opposed to it is a fact that cannot be disputed.

The North had slavery too, and only got rid of it because it wasn't economically sound for them to continue having it when they did get rid of it. A good deal of Northerners were for slavery, in fact the abolition movement wasn't even a majority in the North if I'm not mistaken. And believe you me, the North was also quite racist - everywhere in the country was back in those days.
