A quick look through this bill, and it's already way too far out of left field for me to support in anything resembling its current forms. Politicizing the police even more and making them subject to the whims of an elected body for many everyday doesn't strike me as a good idea at all.

There are some things in here I would definitely support, such as the ban on people with any involvement in bigoted groups serving in the force, but we'll need to cut down a LOT and perhaps add on some more acceptable provisions if we wish to do anything about the current situation in our country. Perhaps we can ensure that there is a special prosecutor to handle charges against the police independent of the force itself in all jurisdictions?

NAY

I share most of the concerns Lief brought up. This bill has a lot of sections I definitely could not vote for, but this amendment removes some of the positive things in it.

But I definitely think we may need to reincorporate some of the removed sections, such as the language on entrapment.

I concur with the President on this; sting operations in and of themselves aren't a bad thing at all, but we need to set reasonable standards so that entrapment for the sake of entrapment doesn't occur.

Is there a clean copy of the bill as it stands now? I'd like to put forth an amendment (although I do support the changes put in by Griffin)

Lief, I think we need to put back in an oversight mechanism, but I don't think elected police councils per 25,000 residents is a great idea.

Is there a provision in the constitution that prevents us from enacting this?

Doesn't the federal government designate hate groups or something like that? Couldn't we just clarify the bill to mention that instead?

The Senate should concern itself with passing the best legislation it can. If someone wants to challenge it after it becomes law, I have full confidence in our justice department to defend it.

I agree with Lief here; I haven't yet heard anything but a vague statement as to why exactly the provisions of the bill as it stands right now would be unconstitutional. If someone can give a coherent, specific argument on why this is out of bounds of the Senate's jurisdiction and proposes a viable alternative course of action, I would be up for that, but for now, I don't see why we can't keep this provision.

Glad to see you added a section about entrapment into the original amendment. I'll vote for it.

To my fellow Senators opposed to the newest amendment, I encourage you to propose another amendment after this one. Even if it isn't perfect, it provides a very strong foundation for us to build on.

Aye.

I want to work with Senator Lief and TNF to elaborate on the oversight councils in this bill, however.

I would like it we put punitive measures if the regions failed to meet certain standards, such as a heavy fine.

For now, Reluctant AYE, but I think this still needs work...
