It’s actually weirdly common for politicians to have opponents with their name. Rep. Ron Estes had a primary challenge from a Ron Estes. Rep. Mike Doyle would have faced against a Republican named Mike Doyle but he lost to Summer Lee. Rep. José Serrano had the same thing in 2004.

My favorite example is a woman changed her name to Carol Moseley Braun allegedly because she thought of Sen. Moseley Braun as a hero, but then tried to run for city council and had her name change reversed.

Congressman Mike Doyle (D) did not lose to Summer Lee, he retired. Lee won the primary for the open seat and beat Mike Doyle (R) in the general.
