Bit pathetic they even retried her. I would've thought that double jepoardy unless new and significant evidence was discovered was a common factor of a Western legal system.

Not really, it exist in around half of the western countries, but USA use the most strict model. There's nothing really exceptional about these people being retried up to the supreme court.
