Anyway, it's not the socialist tradition that I'm rooted in and identify with, but it is one that I can respect, for all its occasional silliness. The eugenics business and the general crankish gullibility of the Webbs (c.f. the Soviet Union as a new and higher form of civilisation; urgh) and their acolytes shouldn't be ignored or excused but needs to be understood in its proper context; British intellectuals during the late Victorian and Edwardian eras were overwhelmingly supportive of eugenics irrespective of politics* and the era was highly conducive to absurd crankery...
