Owls are cool bro. It'd be a better party animal than elephants or donkeys.

I think the Modern Whigs have the owl as their party symbol.

Presidents Lincoln and Teddy Roosevelt were the Modern day Whigs.

1916 was the year that the party split came about, as WWI and neutralization stemmed the Whig movt; and the Income Tax Increase created the Torie party; which gave rise to Tea Party movement. Which name wasnt official given until 2010.

But Hughes; who still symbolized the owl, was far different than Harding and Hoover; opposition to tax increases which lead to Great Depression.
I don't see much evidence showing that opposition to tax increases on the part of Presidents Harding, Coolidge, and Hoover played a major a role in causing the Great Depression. If anything, changes in monetary policy by the Federal Reserve, lack of adequate stock market regulation, changes in international trade pattern as a result of the Smoot–Hawley Tariff Act, the overextension of consumer credit, and the overproduction of consumer goods in a way that could not keep up with demand were the main causes of the Great Depression.

Lessons not learn from the Dubya Bush tax cuts of 2001.

When Grover Cleveland and Harding were president; when country were turning into economic hardship tax receipts were down. As country which ran huge deficots during 1920's and after 2001.

It was the raising of the tax bracket of the rich from 25-79 percent that helped pull us out of the Great Depression. By Hoover who changed his mind on this and FDR.

Same with Obama; he lifted taxes on riches Americans.

I excluded Coolidge and Teddy; the were for estate taxes. As new welfare programs for poor were installed during FDR administration.
According to data from http://federal-budget.insidegov.com, the U.S. was actually running budget surpluses each year from 1920 to 1930, even during the Recession of 1920-21. It really wasn't until the start of the Great Depression that the budget deficit began to increase.
