Jerry Brown (D), though doing more homework on mr. Brown makes him less than ideal as is - he's a political chameleon of entirely different form. Brown was considered "more fiscally conservative than Reagan" during his time as Governor of California, and practiced very serious budget restraint, even gaining the endorsement of anti-tax hero Harold Jarvis after making serious cuts in order to balance California's budget following passage of Prop 13. That being said, he was also very strong on enviormental issues and opposed capital punishment. He ran as "The Era of Limits" candidate and Mr. Austerity in 1980, losing very badly.

He then ran in 1992 after a weird 12 year break with a whole wonky clowncar of policies - a flat tax, fair trade, a bag of anti-establishment policies. Break now to 2017 - Brown has made peace with the establishment and is basically the model for Elder Statesmen in the Democratic Party.

He's a fascinating figure, an interesting politician, but almost certainly not a model in consistent leadership.
