Why are y'all thinking the US has anything to do with this ? I mean, the Turkish can surely organize their own coups without Murican involvement, as they have repeatedly shown before. If anything, military coup to restore civic order is a Turkish specialty !

Fights seem to be under way in both Istanbul and Ankara. https://twitter.com/BNONews Sure hope this doesn't turn into a bloodbath one way or the other, we got enough of these already...

Seems like the coup is failing. Lots of people demonstrating in the streets, more numerous than armed forces can handle.

So when can we expect to find Putin's fingerprints all over this?
Once again, Turkey can have their coups without any foreign help.

There must be some serious level of support for the coup within the army, otherwise we should have already seen loyalist units deployed to fight the putschists, no ?

HDP, main Kurdish political party in Turkey,
That's not really what it is. HDP is the main left-wing party in Turkey, and is derived from several groups, the largest of which was the main Kurdish political party.

There doesn't seem to be any kind of popular support in the street in favor of the coup, which is pretty informative on its chances of success, and, frankly, a little surprising.

From what I can gather on twitter, it seems that in Istanbul the coup has pretty much failed, but in Ankara there are still a lot of fighting and bombing. Not sure you can control the country if you only conquer Ankara and not Istanbul though...

The nutjobs still heavily firing on official buildings in Ankara must be stopped now. In Istanbul things seem to have calmed down a notch. Erdogan's plane is landing in Atatürk airport right now. Oh the irony.

The video of the Parliament session being interrupted by what sounds like a tank shell hitting the building is incredible!

Taksim square seemingly bombed by jet plane. Police shooting at the planes with their handguns. Has Erdogan landed just a little too soon ?

CNN Turkey and Hürriyet buildings invaded by military. This is a second wave. Erdogan must be regretting his landing.

Taksim was actually not bombed, it was the sonic boom.

I can't confirm if the loud explosion at Atatürk airport is actually a bombing or just the sonic boom from jets flying by very low like at Taksim.

Current numbers : 192 dead, including 104 coup soldiers, 47 civilians and 41 police. At least 1,154 injured. 754 arrested.

Occam's razor tells us Erdogan didn't plan this by himself to gain power in a Palpatine way. Still, we can also admit that 1) he probably had intelligence reports that something fishy was coming, since someone always speak, and 2) when sh**t hit the fan, he was therefore quick to take off to safety with his plane and let the thing unravel.

Funny how I learned the name Inçirlik here last night, and how I haven't read it anywhere else since then. Nobody mentions it anywhere, I'm afraid it's just you Americans being Americanocentric. This coup was not a US thing, was not about the US, and even Erdogan doesn't really believe it's been Gulen behind it so he will talk about it a little but won't demand an extradition.
