It is really remarkable that Americans are now further from achieving Lincoln's dream of national unity than they were in 1890; there are people in this thread right now who feel more animosity towards the Confederacy than did many of the men who actually fought against it.

That most of you seem to view the civil war as 'WWII on American soil' is an indictment of the American educational system.
And exactly why should we not feel animosity towards people who were fighting to protect slavery?

Everyone practiced slavery at that time

Not everyone. The United States of America did though.

"The protester who climbed a ladder to help bring down a Confederate soldier statue was arrested Tuesday, and Sheriff Mike Andrews said his office will pursue felony charges against others."

Apparently she's a commie. Reds, Nazis, Confederates ... are we going to have Tories poping up next?

Can we get rid of every photo of Robert Byrd while we're at it?  Please?

FDR threw an entire racial minority in concentration camps. Take his evil racist grin off the dime.

Bill Clinton had a confederate flag on his campaign buttons can we get rid of his statues.

I made this point in the other thread too, but you guys are (perhaps willfully) missing the key distinction here.  This is a false equivalence.  Yes, some good people do bad things, and some bad people do good things.  Very few people are unequivocally good or bad.  The point is that we should not be celebrating traitors as if they were heroes.  Whatever else you say about them, Lee, Jackson, etc. were declared enemies of the United States who fought to tear it apart.

Can you agree that we should not erect statues to people who fought against this country?

Does that include John Brown?

Certainly.  Motivation does not excuse behavior.

Fair enough. What about the Albert Pike statue? He was a confederate but the statue is for unrelated stuff he did after the war.

Brown was no traitor. While he did fiercely oppose the slave power and it's hold on the government, he was never a disunion advocate like Garrison and instead proposed an alternate Constitution. Regardless, he was tried for treason against the state of Virginia and not the United States.

He murdered a bunch of people attacking a federal armory.

A bunch of whiners at UNC now protesting monuments.  Get out and earn a living and get the hell off of my TV.

Not sure if you're there yet but can't wait until we can say "stop complaining, get a job and get off your social security welfare check!". Roll Eyes

Nope 10 years away, pal, and if you think I'm relying on SS to be there or to live on, you're insane.  And the only place you'll find me protesting is on a golf course when I f[inks[ up a 2 foot putt.

Cheating on scores too? Because that's all my boomer dad comes back and bitches about is all the other old bitches bitch about playing like crap and cheat their scorecards.

Sounds more interesting than a bunch of dumb kids talking about how oppressive the inanimate stone figures are.
