You do realise that the Catholic church is somewhat less concerned about gay rights than the average secular Westerner, don't you?

I wouldn't expect the conclave to go beyond Friday, though. That would project a huge sign of division, something the RCC has to avoid. If this goes beyond Friday, then things turned ugly.

I still think the decision will be made tomorrow, as long conclaves have basically disappeared over the last 100 years. 8 ballots is still my prediction.
Yes, tomorrow's later ballots or the day after is entirely plausible.

When this conclave's get leaked (it always happens, eventually) it will probably make for more interesting reading than last time.

I say tomorrow or Friday at the latest.

The balcony door is still closed I believe. The new Pope must be figuring out his new clothes.

Or maybe he hasn't put any thought into the Papal name. Tongue

Although it's somewhat surprising that no one used that name in the century's since Assisi.

Given that nobody had used a new name in centuries, presumably no pope wanted to be the first to change things.

What about John Paul I?

Socially conservative, of course, but his views and contact with poverty is encouraging.

Is he anti-poverty in the form of state spending or does he lean more towards individual charity?

He doesn't really seem interested in that distinction, actually. He's criticized free-market capitalism but not to the extent of being aligned with liberation theology.

Seems acceptable enough for me then. Not that my opinion matters Tongue

I'll never understand why supporting a Latin Mass has remained a caused associated with reactionaries. It's like every in the US where every politician who supports lower taxes opposes abortion rights. These issues have nothing to do with each other.

I'm a hardcore leftist in most regards and I'd love to bring the Latin Mass back.

I think it goes with general attitude. I've found that most of the people who want the church to accept divorce, abortion etc. use the "making the church more accessible" argument. That sort of mindset doesn't really lend itself to switching back to a mass in a language that most won't understand.
