Sweatshops get such a bad rap because of the conditions but if you asked any of those workers they'd be grateful for that job as they pay higher the most other jobs in third world countries. Similarly, sweatshops pave the way for economic growth eg. in the 60s Japan was full of them.

So they should just suck it up, right?

It's that or no income, if these countries had the same standards that western countries come to expect than there'd be no option for these people. Obviously we'd love a world where everyone had the right to a safe work environment and a good living wage but we don't live in utopia and this option is better than no option.

We do, however, live in a world that could restrict trade with countries that don't require living wages or safe work environments. But that would hurt the feelings of the 1%-ers, so it's probably not going to happen any time soon.

The problem with many of these 3rd world countries is that their workers simply lack the education and/or capital to even produce enough to maintain a minimum wage.

The per capita GDP in Bangladesh is a mere $800/yr in nominal terms and only about $1800/yr in PPP. How do you expect a Bangladeshi textile worker to be paid a "living wage" when he only produces a fraction of said wage?

If trade restrictions are imposed these people are all going to lose their jobs and will be far, far worse off than before the advent of the sweatshop. Why do you hate poor people?

e: The basic argument here is literally "We're not going to trade with countries until they're as rich as we are". Er...
We do, however, live in a world that could restrict trade with countries that don't require living wages or safe work environments. But that would hurt the feelings of the 1%-ers, so it's probably not going to happen any time soon.

So you punish the worker by denying them a chance to make a living? That doesn't seem fair.
I'd like to see some answers to these posts.

difficulty level-no snark
The lack of even a poor attempt to answer these questions speaks volumes.

Easy: We'll force companies to pay Bangladeshi textile workers more than they can produce and then expect them to continue funding a money losing operation indefinitely because... because... SOCIALISM! /sarcasm

I think one answer to your questions is the Buchananite approach where you just say you don't care about those workers and want those jobs moved back to the USA. I don't think any of the lefties subscribe to that view, but perhaps White Trash Heroes does.
