Trump didn't have the where to all to defuse an "awkward" situation. He had some muscle to dispatch Ramos. Trump can't handle the heat that adversial situations represent.
Trump didn't want to be done like Bernie Sanders. I can't blame him for that. And while the response to Ramos was somewhat heavy-handed, Ramos's use of his press credential to, essentially, heckle the candidate and use his time not to question the candidate, but produce an angry confrontation was unprofessional for a journalist.
In that context, Trump's response was cool and correct. He brought Ramos back in and gave him a chance to at least try to ask a question, rather than heckle and make a statement, and he responded to Ramos more candidly than most candidates do. Most people would do the same thing. It wasn't just that Ramos's question was undulyy argumentatitve, it was also that he cut off the reporter who was recognized. It was a bit refreshing to see someone insist that someone play by the rules.
