Utterly unsurprising, if horrible, mockery of justice. Coming from a heavily red state it doesn't surprise me in the least.
The Judge responsible for this ridiculousness is a Michigan Judge, not a Florida Judge.
Florida law in child custody and adoption issues is rather progressive. The standard in deciding a case is the "best interest of the child". I should know; there's a reason my wife and I were able to adopt our STEP-Grandson when the dysfunction of my son and his mother came to a head. (There are no blood relatives that are sober and stable; sad, but true.)
Furthermore, this man isn't just a "rapist". If it's true that he's had sex with 13-15 year olds, Florida will view him as a Sex Offender.
I am praying that Florida provides justice and protection for this child, and that a wise Judge look at the totality of circumstances.
