I actually just got it yesterday. I haven't passed 1024 yet, but it's super addicting.

Pick one direction to "never move" the blocks.

That actually helped quite a bit. It's not a perfect strategy, especially since there's randomness in where the next blocks appear. I did have two 2048 blocks, but wasn't able to combine them into a 4096.

I finally got to 4096, but it didn't last long. At that stage of the game, if you can't keep the highest tile in the corner, it's not going to last very long.
