It does assume quite drastic demographic changes, but current trends could make it plausible.

What "current trends" show the entire Midwest (yet alone half of New England) becoming safe Republican?

The ones he made up in his head.

NYM, I don't agree that the Midwest or half of New England will become safely Republican anytime in the foreseeable future, but you mock anyone who says pretty much anywhere is trending Republican.  You can't possibly believe the Democratic Party will just continue to enjoy gains everywhere until the EC is just theirs for the taking every election.
According to me, the republicans picking up the MW, a higher share of the white vote would be needed.
I dont think that will happen. They will likely overperform among the latino vote, putting NV, NM and CO again.
