LOL. Eisenhower's presidency was the start of the transformation of the GOP into what it is today, with the demise of traditional Taftian conservatism.

Bill Taft was in some places more liberal than Teddy Roosevelt was. Eisenhower was a social liberal, a defense hawk, and a fiscal conservative - the centrist position that I like in politicians.

I'm not talking about any Bill Taft.

The 1952 GOP nomination was as usual a battle between the forces of Wall Street (Eisenhower) and Main Street (Taft). Throughout American history, the same people have won time and time again and 1952 was no different. That would be Taft's last chance- and the Old Right's last chance- to exert influence upon U.S. policy. At least Stevenson was committed to nuclear disarmament.

Eisenhower's legacy haunts us to this day. Like, for instance, the disastrous Interstate Highway System.

Indeed, the destructive effects of that Nazi-inspired scheme, especially on small-town America, are still being felt today. The damage can't be undone, but we're going to have to rein in the sprawl eventually.

As States pointed out, it was built with the intent of enabling the further militarization of America.

The idea for the Autobahn system in Germany was conceived and started before the Nazis rose to power, just fyi.

Oh definitely, it was mostly worked on under the Nazis, and just because something was done under the Nazis doesn't mean it's automatically bad and something no country can adopt, but I was just poking holes in Libertas' latest effort to label anything he doesn't like fascist and/or Nazi-esque.

Um, regardless of who came up with the idea, the completion of the Autobahn was a crowning achievement of Hitler's Nazi regime and his government 'public works' scheme.

Ike's intent in building the 'National Interstate and Defense Highways' certainly reeked of Prussianism.
