As a matter of philosophy, what side is it better to error on?

Too much.

Certain issues that I have no preference for or against, like abortion, I choose to error on the side of freedom and become weakly pro-choice.

That would be one of the exceptions for me. Normally I'd prefer to error on the side of freedom, but I would rather error on the side of life than on the side of death.

There's no such thing as "too much freedom."

Suspect you may be confusing 'license' with 'liberty.'

More freedom is always good, but less government does not always mean more freedom.

It's pretty hard for you, yourself, to ever think you have too much freedom. But for the people around you, you can have too much freedom.

Would a country where murdering people is legal as long as it's not July or December be an example of too much freedom, or no?

If I murder someone I'm actually destroying freedom, so no.

Well, one person's freedom was destroyed. Another's was exercised.

Well, one person's freedom was destroyed. Another's was exercised.

The net result is less freedom.

The maximization of freedom would not entail legalizing murder.  "There is no such thing as too much freedom" doesn't mean "we shouldn't have any legal system."

I think Philip is talking about utilitarianism...if a group of sadists torture someone to death their combined pleasure might exceed the suffering for the one tortured. So if you get rid of absolute morals you ca justify a lot of different actions.

I disagree.  Death = black hole for freedom.

Besides, utilitarianism is only talking about maximizing the amount of "good,"  which is different from maximizing the amount of "freedom."  I actually disagree strongly with utilitarianism and favor a deontological method at looking at what we ought to do.
