NPR has announced that president and CEO Vivian Schiller has resigned.

Schiller is not related to former fundraising chief Ron Schiller, who was caught on a secretly taped video blasting Tea Party supporters as "racist" and saying the public broadcasting outlet doesn't need federal funding.

The NPR executive who was caught on a secretly taped video calling Tea Party supporters "racist" and saying the news organization would be better off without federal funding resigned late Tuesday night.

More from NPR media correspondent David Folkenflik, via Twitter:

"The board for NPR NEWS has just ousted CEO Vivian Schiller in the wake of video sting by conservative activist of a top exec."

Time to give them their wish. Cut them off.

Going after Tea Partiers and Jews at the same time, is probably a diplomatic mistake. Tongue

Guilt by association I guess. Was the CEO at the table when the now famous comments were made?

I'm having a hard time seeing any problem with what was said about the Tea Party, since they bring whatever is said about them on themselves. That cult of nonsense is not worth all the trouble it causes.

Losing you job because of what a colleague says is worth than death points, no?

Similar though.  Can't say anything bad about the fascists or their clients.

Technically, she resigned.

And, I don't know that that was necessary.  Ron Schiller should've been fired, but if she's willing to clean house and make sure that NPR is not so biased, then I have no problem with her staying.

Then again, her fundraising VP said they didn't need the federal money, so if that's the case, they can get rid of that and broadcast messages straight from the DNC for all I care.

Who are the "fascists"?  Nobody involved in any of this is remotely "fascist".  And the self-censorship routine got old a few months ago, by the way.

NPR's supposed liberal bias is highly segregated into a few shows and certain episodes in a few shows. Most of the shows on NPR don't evidence a political bias, in fact I usually get upset with them for having a conservative bias. Of course I suppose James O'Keefe would prefer that only AM Radio and Fox News disseminate the "truth."

PS, all three high profile firings on NPR over the past year, starting with Juan Williams have been mistaken and stupid. They need to stop firing people and start standing up for themselves.

Well, the fundraising guy was probably just saying what he needed to to get money, but at the point that you're getting federal money, you need your fundraising arm to appear more balanced.

If they have conservative and liberal shows that balance out, that's not really a problem.

Regardless of bias in NPR, they usually have very well informed regular listeners.

I'm sure if a conservative offered money the fundraiser would have said whatever he wanted to hear.

I don't find NPR particularly biased. There are a few interviews with softball questions to Lefties, but NPR specializes in softball questions. It is Mr. Nice. So, in my opinion, NPR's conservative critics are largely off base.

I call them as I see them.

It depends on the program.  The programs on public radio that evidence a liberal bias mainly come from PRI not NPR.  Of course, some of them are inherently liberal.  About the only way to make Living on Earth a conservative program instead of a liberal program would be to make it anti-environment instead of pro-environment.

No, I think O'Keefe and most conservatives would prefer that NPR say whatever NPR wants to say on its own dime.  Once you take taxpayer money, you can't go around badmouthing a significant political movement.

Its worth noting the outside consultant hired by NPR lat year (IIRC) who made these statements has/had nothing to do with the editorial side of NPR.

I'm reasonably sure that plenty of people drawing salaries from the Bush Administration used their official positions to do exactly that. Monica Goodling essentially barred gays and lesbians from serving in any Justice Dept. position she oversaw because they were likely to be Democrats... and I don't think it would be hard to find various people whose salary I paid making derogatory comments about the homosexual lifestyle. It's how government works, it's unavoidable.

Remind me what comments Ms. Schiller made that cinyc is babbling about?
