http://www.wsws.org/articles/2011/dec2011/davi-d01.shtml

I would fully support this one one condition: that the Occupiers who support this break not only re-consider their alignment towards the Democratic Party, but also re-consider the utility of traditional Democratic methods to attain what they want - that is to say, State-sanctioned regulatory institutions, corporate welfare and subsidy, and indirect wealth redistribution. If the OWS turns in the direction of participatory industrial democracy and co-operativism, it will have my support.

If, however, they call for nothing more than the traditional Democratic platform, New Dealism on steroids, then I will abandon them completely and, moreover, support the opposition to them. They have a chance to re-oriented left-winged politics in this country in a fundamentally anti-hierarchical fashion. But that means re-evaluating old values.

At the assembly, the only objection raised was a concern that addressing the wider problems would lead to a lack of focus on the local and immediate role that Chancellor Katehi played in the police assault on students November 18. The general assembly overall felt that the line ascribing direct responsibility to Katehi sufficiently addressed that concern.

“This is an important resolution—I’m glad it passed,” Lee said. “There are many political questions that have to be tackled if the protests against inequality are to be driven forward. There are definite efforts by the trade unions and other political forces to channel mass anger behind the Democratic Party in one form or another. There is a real danger that opposition will be co-opted or will disintegrate into shallow protest politics. This is only the beginning of an effort to fight for a fundamentally different political perspective.”[/quote]

The Occupy movement was never a part of the Dems to begin with. They seem pretty pissed off that both parties take huge amounts of money from corporate interests. And rightfully so.

Not to mention the attitude of most Democrats towards the movement is to pat them on the head and say "that's nice, now go vote for our party".

The goal should not be for them to attach themselves to the Democrats, but for the Democrats to try to attach themselves to OWS.  We'd be a better country if the Dems said no to corporate control... even if it means we lose the election next year.

Stardust is too animated to be a Trotskyist.  Usually the ones you meet on the internet are rather dull, unable to express themselves beyond a set number of talking points.

I'm not making any effort to hide who I am. The second time I registered, my account was "Einzige Mk. II".

The Republicans capitalized on the Tea Party immediately, the most Tea Partiers have always been Republican or center-right anyway. This wave of support quickly became the GOP establishment, and no doubt is well organized. The Democrats have no annexed OWS into their movement, because its so divided. Socialist, Union workers, Conservatives, Progressives, Environmentalist, Green Party activist, and Ron Paul people all fit in the mix. So OWS very well could split and hurt Obama, or be mobilized for him.

Wasn't there some poll where 70% of them were independents? In any case, I think it's clear that they're not Obama supporters.

R.I.P. Sad to hear the poor fellow couldn't make it out of his fever after protesters tried to take care of him despite being homeless and having drug problems.

Nice try at attempting to smear Occupy.

I'd love to see real leftists unite.  Progressives, socialists, and the like have nothing to gain from latching on to the stagnant institution that is the Democratic Party, or from being divided between like ten different parties.

The first goal, certainly, should be to implement proportional representation/multi-member districts/some other system besides FPTP.  That will make things easier.

Though, perhaps they should look into supporting the Green Party and Green Party candidates.  They have quite a bit of success at the local level, after all.

Yeah, they've been pretty clear that neither party is acceptable to them, one of the reasons I respect what they're trying to do.
