I really don't know what to make of him anymore at this point. There's no denying he's a brilliant man, but other than that he's a really ambiguous figure for me right now. I certainly don't think his health care ruling excuses, insofar as we can really talk about 'excusing', some other aspects of the directions he's taken the Court in, but that 'insofar' is an odd little nugget of a thing.

I pretty much agree with Nathan; I don't know quite where I stand on this. I viewed him as a generic judicial conservative who was just on the bench to impede progress, but the events of the last week or so have certainly bumped him up a few points in my book.

A crafty fellow. I'll withhold judgment for now.

Judge Roberts made the terrible decision of ruling on a law based on whether it was constitutional or not. He seems to not understand that the Supreme Court is and has always been a political vehicle where the justices must vote down a party line. We must forgive him, though, as he is just a silly barrister.

One spurt of intelligence does not erase the years he spent attempting to counter any kind of progress.

FF. The only conservative non-hack, a-la Scalia, on the Court.

He's very sharp, though I'm still trying to figure out his thought process on Obamacare.

HP. One good decision a good Justice does not make. Roberts voted with the conservative majority in Citizens United, so there's nothing, I think that can really make up for that, in my book.

HP Obviously bowed to media pressure to secure himself street-cred with the Washington elite.

Way too soon to evaluate his tenure. The man has his whole SCOTUS career ahead of him.

With the usual caveats, he appears to take his position and the role of the court more seriously than some on the bench.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

This -I tip my hat to him.  In time, liberals (particularly those favoring centralized government over federalism/states rights) will rue his recent decision as conservatives currently condemn it.

There's little doubt that the Roberts Court will be regarded as the most conservative court since the Lochner era.

Neutral.

I'm not going to vote HP just because he's a conservative justice and there's a lot of things on I disagree with him. I have to acknowledge he's a very able jurist.

And I'm not going to vote FF just because of one ruling.

I admire his intelligence and tendency to be argumentative but there is absolutely no way I would consider him an FF for a single ruling. Like Mikado said, we're dealing with the most conservative court in generations.
