Making fun of the left wing of the GOP are ya?

Yeah, I'm a johnson fan and I don't care who knows it.  Me and Al Sharpton.  Chris Matthews:  "Reverend, who's your favorite modern president?"  Sharpton:  "Well, except for the War, I'd have to say Johnson.  But even in spite of the War, I still favor Johnson best."  What the hell?  There are Reagan Democrats.  Why can't there be Sharpton Republicans?

Anyway, I just mailed off my income tax refund forms, so today I'm a Reagan fan.

Or, as plutocrat extraordinaire and gun-nut Carla Howell, Libertarian candidate for US Senate (MA, 2000) used to say, "Smaller is better!"  At least till I get all my checks, and until I find myself in need of any governmnet services, I'm in accord the right wing of our party.

  Wink

Not at all, I am in the left wing of the party myself.  I like LBJ as well to some extent, that's why I brought him up.

I'm going to have to say Tom. I'm not a particularly big fan of his, and I've got to say that I really dislike what he has done to the House of Representatives to ram his agenda through - however, that says more about my galaxy-sized crush on the institution of Congress than it does about DeLay. And the reality is that Tom is an effective leader who you can count on to do the things he says he will. You may or may not LIKE what he says he's going to do, but you'd better be sure that he'll use every play in the book to get his agenda done.

I learned that he was a North Carolina Governor in non-consecutive terms, one of which was from 1862 to 1865, and that his home is now a historical site, and that after he was sent to prison at the end of the war, was again elected North Carolina's governor.  Apparently when a Jewish shopkeeper, Samuel Wittkowsky, learned of the order to arrest Vance, Wittkowsky convinced the officers that his friend was honorable and would not flee.  Later Vance lives in Charlotte. He has served as governor during war and in peacetime.   Later, Vance will be elected to the U.S. Senate.

I also learned that he "... epitomized the complex social and political nature of his times"  Hmmmm.  sounds intriguing.  Actually, the more I read, the more I see why you chose this name.  Also, he's a very handsome man.  Relative of yours, by any chance??

Vance considered running for governor as a Whig, but then said something along the lines of "the Whigs are dead and buried, and I ain't bringing 'em back". Zell Miller cites him as a major inspiration.
