Considering that the German press already some four weeks ago named Rouhani as possible winner (in fact, there was not any other candidate's background  even discussed in the press here), I am not sure what to make out of this result. OK, an experienced negotiator (Rouhani) is better than a hardliner (Ahmadinejad), but otherwise, this does not look like much of a change ..

Well, good for the Iranian people for having a majority vote for the least bad of their 6 candidates.

Did the pro-Ahmadinejad people went for Rouhani as retaliation against establishment for refusing Rezaei registration.
Rezaee wasn't disqualified.

Iranian results map so far:

Purple is obviously Rouhani.

Don't know which colours represent the other candidates though.

Updated version of the map: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:2013_Presidential_Election_map-Iran.png.

Blue is Rezaee (he is only 4th nationally but somehow won 4 provinces); probably yellow is Ghalibaf and red is Jalili.

Looks like Rouhani did bad in Sunni and Kurd areas. I guess they didn't want to vote for a Shia cleric.

Maybe. But why Sunni areas voted for Rezaee rather than, for example, Ghalibaf? Can anyone explain?

I think this outcome is somehow positive. Rohani seems to have been the right person in the right time.

First, he was close enough to the regime and Khamenei to be allowed to be candidate, and then to be "allowed" to win right from the first round.

Second, he was perceived by the people, rightly or wrongly, after Aref's withdrawal and the debates (and Khatami's endorsement ? did he nedorse him after all ?), as the reformist candidate, and people started to go out en masse to vote for him. I'm sure the final turnout was built in the very last four or five days. If Rohani hadn't been perceived as a reformist, albeit a very moderate one, able to win the race, turnout would have been way lower.

So I guess we can just wait and see nothing change on the basics, but a little on rhetorics...

Pity, Iran is such a marvellous country.

What is really interesting is that as of May Rouhani was still polling in the low single digits and only moved to high single digits in early June.

Just found out that my Granny couldn't be bothered to go out and vote in this election. Needless to say her vote was not needed anyway.
