We'll proceed with a hearing to make it official and "by the books."

Talleyrand has been nominated to serve as Deputy to the Secretary of Federal Elections. Questions may commence now!

I'm not a Senator, but I'd like to ask the basic question but an important one: what do you think are the duties of the position?

The purpose of this position is to handle federal election administration at times when the Secretary of Federal Elections is unavailable to perform the duties of his or her office. I have a solid understanding of the IRV and PR-STV systems which are used in all federal races, as demonstrated by the election tracking I have done in the past, and would be adept at this position.

Any other questions?

I am not a Senator so I don't know if you are required to answer. There has been a lack of questions so I will ask one.

Do you think the job of DSoFE is incompatible with partisan work for a party in an election by the same person? If the DSoFE needs to replace the SoFE after the election has begun, the DSoFE could have worked in a partisan role during the election and also be the person who ends up overseeing the election.

I'm confident in this nomination and have no specific questions at this time.

I don't think there's an issue with the SoFE or DSoFE engaging in partisan work for a party in an election they run. The main purpose of the Secretary or an assistant is to accurately count votes, and these are available for public record so that they're not misconstrued for partisan gain (we have a lot of hawkish election-watchers). It's no different than a Governor running a regional election, and probably even less of a "conflict-of-interest".

For the record I think Talleyrand will be a fine DSoFE and I'll be supporting him. That said I do have one question:

What's your take on write ins like "All the candidates are great" or "Matt Damon"?

Green or Lime Green.

As long as write-ins don't affect the way someone should vote, I would be fine with them. I think that's the policy Homelycooking has been following recently.

Okay, time for a final vote here. I'm sure Talleyrand will do a great job when called upon!

I support the confirmation of Talleyrand as DSoFE, and assure the Senate that his estimable services and talents will be called upon in the (very rare) cases of my absence so that there will be no question as to "who's in charge" at any given point.

It's been five days and we have 6-0, so I'll call it as confirmed.
