Could he be a contender? Former Representative (2003-2009), former White House Chief of Staff (2009-2010), Mayor of Chicago (2011-). That's a pretty diverse variety, working in Congress, the White House, and the mayor of a large city.

Maybe we could have a Jon Tester/Rahm Emanuel finger amputee ticket?

I think the base would fight his nomination very hard, so no chance.

Not a chance in hell. Gun murders in Chicago have soared under his watch.

Plus I don't think the teachers strike helped him either.

They have not "soared" but no he won't be the nominee or even a real candidate.

Mandatory national service is one of the third rails in politics.

While he certainly has experience, I doubt he'd be able to win the nomination. He could be picked for VP perhaps.

One of the few scenarios in which I'd vote third party.

In any cycle that didn't include Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, Andrew Cuomo and Mark Warner as potential candidates, he'd have a resume impressive enough to generate interest. The Chicago media market may give him a boost in Iowa.

But I don't see him running. He doesn't have much of a natural constituency. He's pissed off a lot of people on the left, and taken stances that will hurt him with the center. And the general sense is that he wants to run for Governor at some point, so a failed presidential bid might hurt his chances with that office. Better to run as a successful mayor than as a guy who tried for higher office and failed.

The potential Christie/Rahm debates could be really entertaining, as far as presidential debates go.  I wouldn't be surprised if he ran for President. Even though he'd get a lot of media attention, I can't imagine him actually winning the nomination.

He'd be a good VP pick. Other than that, no.

If Rahm runs for Illinois Governor, a Republican will win that seat... He's an extreme version of Chris Christie.
