The surprise nomination of an unpopular ticket in each party causes massive in-party fights, as evidence of mass voter fraud and rigging of election laws abounds.  All of this outrage eventually inspires the creation of a third party to run in the general election.  The so-called "Moderate Hero Party" manages to run an emergency primary in which all states vote on the same day.  Naturally, problems ensue when neither candidate wins a majority of the preferential vote.

Senator Angus King of Maine
Former Governor and Ambassador Jon Huntsman of Utah
Senator Joe Manchin of West Virginia
Former Mayor Michael Bloomberg of New York
Former Senator Scott Brown of Massachusetts

On the day of the convention, the Moderate Heroes form a "compromise ticket" by nominating Angus King for President and Jon Huntsman for Vice President.

Election Day, also as expected, turns out to be a bust.

Senator Angus King of Maine and Former Governor and Ambassador Jon Huntsman of Utah (Moderate Hero) - 46.17% PV, 231 EV
State Representative WalterMitty of Massachusetts and DEA Administrator Adam C. FitzGerald of Ohio (Democratic) - 30.41% PV, 193 EV
Civil Rights Activist and Historian Oldiedfreak1854 of Michigan and Economist AggregateDemand of Texas (Republican) - 23.42% PV, 114 EV

The election goes to Congress, where the House elects Oldiesfreak1854 as President and the Senate elects Adam C. FitzGerald as Vice President.

An Oldies/Adam anti-drug ticket vs. Walter/AD neo-liberal ticket would make more sense.
