Certain right wingers have claimed so in the past and that PC Leftists will never speak negatively of Islam.

Now let's look at this forum and see who's more pro-Islam. The 3 most anti-Islam posters here:

if you are referring to me, BRTD, you grossly exaggerate what i said in the thread you made asking people whether they agree with your views on Islam.  i am in no way saying you should not be allowed to express your opinion regarding Islam, or to ban any and all criticism therein.  in fact, i believe (and have expressed this sentiment before) that Islam needs -and is capable of- reform to accomodate democratic change, and that there should be some measure of mosque-state separation similar to the church-state separation we have in the western world, particularly in the United States for this liberal democratic transformation to take effect.

i simply disagree with your stance that we need to have secular dictatorships in the Islamic world to keep Islam down and under control by sheer force.

this is not political correctness -it's common sense.

I wasn't referring to you or any other Democrat. But rather Republicans, most notably dazzlema, who claim most leftists consider it un-PC to criticize Islam and would never do so, and that they want to make it illegal to write a book critical of Islam like some supposed French journalist was arrested for doing so, despite the fact that France does not have a leftist government, and I would like to know all the circumstances of the situation considering the French government is hardly fond of Islam anyway, remember the headscarve ban?

The reason for that grammar error is I originally titled this something like "does your average leftist want to ban criticism of Islam?" which I found too vague, but I forgot to change the "Does" to "Do"

I take it the title was a bit too long. Smiley

I certainly don't believe criticism of Islam should be banned, even though I believe the vast majority of these opponents are attempting to interpret a way of life on our terms that is not readily embraced by the Western mind. In addition, I oppose any code that restricts speech in the name of protecting minority rights. As a minority, I realize that the only right that ensures that the powers that be will not go unanswered is my freedom of speech. Such a right has sacred importance to me, and I imagine it has the same resonance in the conscience for those who feel differently than I do. I also do not share in the pathetic need of many gays to feel liked by others. To insist that one wins approval from people who have every right to dislike him or her as the ultimate expression of political immaturity. I know that upsetting the bigots who hold the strings of the marionette demonstrates my subversiveness, and shows that I have at least inflamed the power structure.

Basically the 10 people who voted yes are saying that they don't understand the first thing about liberals. That's really sad.
