A particularly sad and disastrous example of why pursuing a career just for the money is a really bad idea. (And in this case, the money wasn't even that great.)

It was a means to an end... which ended.

Moving into a middle class mindset requires a different way of thinking about work, and that's hard for those who are unaccustomed to it. Nobody is interested in the types of jobs poors do. Cleaning hotel rooms, manning the fryer at KFC, scanning purchases at BigBoxMart. Yes, some of these jobs may seem more tolerable than others to different people, but nobody gets out of bed with a smile on her face thinking about all the beds she's going make. But if you just force yourself to get through the drudgery, anybody can do any of those jobs sufficiently well. And, of course, once one's shift is over for the day, one need not worry about it until the next shift. This mindset is the problem.

He seems to have less interest than I have in it. That is one skill that I really would like to master personally, particularly architectural CADD. I am not sure that I can fit it into this life, so it will probably have to be deferred to the next one alas.

Put it this way, MY Architecture CADD program has had more use than Bushie's... and I have a full-time job in a different field and a life.
