Under any circumstances could Gary Johnson do as well as Ross Perot did in 92?

No. He'd be lucky to reach Nader 2000 levels.

Only if both major parties forget to obtain ballot access.

Libertarians arent serious about winning an election. Perot was serious but he ran a campaign as though we elect the prtesident in a popular vote. Perot did well in ME, MN, NH and the west. With a change in strategy he could have won EVs.

He might have won some of those states if he hadn't dropped out temporarily.

This, and money is an even bigger factor than it was in 92.

It seems like it was a lot easier to be a third party candidate in the past, Perot, Anderson, Wallace (both of them), La Follette, etc.  Even when actual elected officials run (Johnson, Goode, McKinney, Barr, etc.) they get very few votes.  Ralph Nader, an activist, did better than people who won Congressional and statewide elections.

No. The only 2016 scenario where a third party matches or exceeds Perot's performance is if the Tea Party splits off from the GOP and runs its own candidate.

Libertarians are not popular outside of Atlas and the interwebz in general. IRL nobody cares let alone heard of Gary Johnson.

I saw people with Gary Johnson "Live Free" bumper stickers and I knew people who supported him (some were too young to vote).  I also knew a Conservative Democrat who voted for Romney but had briefly considered voting for Johnson.

I mean, he got a million votes, but okay.

As was shown by the election totals, a million votes does not mean "popular". Three friggin' percent in his home state. Less than one nationwide.

That's pretty good for no media recognition and a massive financial disadvantage.

A million votes--when the other guys also got a million votes--is "popular."

A million votes--when one of the other guys got 66 million and 61 million votes, respectively--is not.

This is the correct response.

Not going to happen, but he could get 2-3% if there are a lot of Independent defectors.

If he got a bit more money, publicity, and some endorsements, he might pull 5%... In NM and MT, so maybe 2% nationwide.

Gary Johnson is like a car without an engine. And not even a good car.
