If he somehow managed to get past Hillary he'd probably have to pick a female running mate, preferably one from a non blue state. Maybe Claire McCaskill? In which case I could see the GOP returning to Kennedy era Catholic bashing.

If the GOP wants to have any hope of gaining the Latino vote, they won't go bashing Catholics.

As to O'Malley's running mate, I'd suggest Klobuchar. She's not from an Atlas Blue state, but she is from the Midwest and seems to be popular back home. If he really wanted to go out in left field, he could pick Baldwin, who might (not sure) help in Wisconsin.

As a former mayor, he might not want another big city politician on his ticket, which could exclude Booker, Castro, Anthony Foxx and Kamala Harris. On the other hand, doubling down on cities can help him in the major swing states, which have large urban populations.

Klobuchar seems safe, as a woman from a politically useful region who can help him in Washington and has the appropriate resume.
