Silly symbolism. These companies all compete globally. "Too big too fail" was a confluence of nationalistic hubris and middle-class avarice. We could easily have paid other companies to assume the bunk contracts of the incompetent firms, but we had two reasons to prop up American companies: 1) xenophobia 2) the government poisoned the credit/energy markets, which submarined private creditors.
