The orangutan who mocks the disabled or the man whose literal title is "Holy Father"? So hard to choose...

If Pope Francis is against the idea of immigration restriction as represented by a wall, he must be horrified about places like Japan or the wealthy Persian gulf Arab countries (which do allow immigrants but don't grant them citizenship), and I'm sure he's always castigating them, right?

Donald, of course.

(Not only do I reject the liberal "you don't have empathy so you're not Christian" attacks when people disagree with them, but I'm a Lutheran who rejects the primacy of the Pope over the Church)

If the Pope wants to see walls come down, let him tear down the walls that protect his city.

That's not an effective argument about the walls around the Vatican, as it actually isn't entirely surrounded by walls, you don't need a visa to enter, St. Peter's Square is open to all, the walls were mostly built when there were actually marauding pirates and armies running around, and if you've got a Vatican Library library card, you can get into the city with no problem.

I'm no Catholic but I'm also not a big fan of Trump's wall so I side with Pope on this.

If the Pope had said Trump was misguided or something he would be in the right, but calling someone "non-Christian" because you disagree with their politics is especially ugly for a religious leader of that importance.

On the one hand we have the dictatorial leader of a reactionary religion that has caused untold suffering for millions of people.

On the other hand we have a guy who said some mean things.

REAL TOUGH CHOICE HERE

By your logic President Obama should be held personally responsible for slavery.

That may be true but it's still VERY problematic that Vatican City doesn't practice an open border policy. All people have an inherent right to live in Vatican City. This is a human rights issue. To be honest, I just don't know anymore if Francis is or isn't a racist neo-nazi bigot.

Trump played this very well, and very presidential. He stated that he was a big fan of the pope, and he was a terrific person but that the Pope hasint seen the damage that illegal immigration has caused (which is completely true).

Very well played by Trump (our next president!), I think he's right that the media blew this thing up way out of proportion (seeing as how the Vatican has rectified its statements).

With TRUMP. A country without a border isn't a country.

And what the Donald believes in, is his personal decision.

Neither (evangelical conservative Pentecostal)

Why can the Vatican (a sovereign nation state) have a wall but not one of the greatest nations in human history (The United States)?

Why I can't side with Trump..... He doesn't know if he's ever asked for forgiveness.

This is now a talking point in conservative land, huh? You do realize that most of those walls were built more than a thousand years ago to protect the city against actual attacks, with the "youngest" sections of the wall being built 500 years ago?

You do realize that the city isn't fully enclosed by walls, right?

You do realize that you can just walk right into the country - no passport needed - for any reason whatsoever, right?

I guess historical structures and monuments of religious significance should just be torn down so that Trump can be called out for the laughable baboon he is: who else tears down ancient religious and historical artifacts in the name of ideological consistency?

Or maybe we should just acknowledge that Trump's plans for a barbwire and concrete fence built in the future are just as legitimate, historical, relevant and will be used in the same way as the Vatican's.

Jesus.

Insert joke about "who'd want to live in Vatican City?" here.

Easily Trump.

What's interesting and revealing is how the pope has walked back a lot of his rhetoric. The pope, in whatever cloak he wishes to present himself, is a theocrat chosen by theocrats whose office is purely symbolic.

I find the popularity of the Pope more annoying than the popularity of Trump, so I'll go with the latter.
