No I've wasted money on things before but thankfully never pissed away $100 million on nothing.

Yes. After taking 100 small loans I decided to build a company and go bankrupt 4 times.

This thread implies that anybody on Atlas would ever have $100 million, let alone $1 million.

I mean, I'm willing to bet this forum's userbase skews wealthier than the average.

I don't know about $100 million, but I am very confident that my lifetime earnings/peak net worth will be significantly higher than $1 million. Most professionals who save around 25% of their yearly income and invest wisely will eventually have at least $2 million-$3 million by the time retirement rolls around. $1 million isn't that much money, and it will especially not be that much money in the future with inflation.

$100 million on the other hand is (obviously) a ton of money. You need at least a net worth of $100 million to be in the top 0.01%. You need a net worth of $8 million+ to be in the top 1%, a net worth of $20 million to be in the top 0.1%, and a net worth of $100 million+ to be in the top 0.01%. Will I (or anyone on Atlas) ever reach an inflation-adjusted net worth of $100 million? Well, anything is possible Tongue

The use of the term "wasted" is very judgmental here. One person's waste, is another person's necessity. I mean, I would consider traveling across the Fruited Plain playing egress or ingress or whatever it is called, a total waste. Others might consider what I spend on mood altering substances, and various indoor sport toys a waste. Smiley

Or at least a portion does.

Somebody once used an example of a typical middle-class family earning $100,000 a year, and no one seemed to find this noteworthy.

To me, that's weird.  I consider myself to be moderately affluent, and I don't earn anywhere near that amount.

If you'd asked me what a typical middle-class income was, I'd probably have said something in the $40,000-$50,000 range.

For two wage-earner family, $100,000 is a little high to be called typical middle class, but it is middle class and it is a nice round number of the sort abstract discussions typically use.
