A gay libertarian. Former Vice Chancellor of Germany and Former Minister of Foreign Affairs, member of the centrist to centre-right FDP.

the FDP was hilariously incompetent in that government, seeing as they were elected on a promise of wide tax cuts and ended up getting ... a single tax credit for hoteliers. He himself was kind of weird and disagreeable as Foreign Minister.

FDP is probably the most unnecessary party in Germany. Ok maybe ALFA is more unnecessary, but I was very content when FDP dropped out from the Bundestag.

The FDP consists of total sellouts (not only on taxes, but also on gay rights) and losers who should be ashamed of themselves, though Westerwelle isn't the worst. Still voted HP.

I generally hate liberal parties that are "between D66 and VVD": they combine all of the negative stuff of these two parties yet lack the redeeming features of either. Open VLD is a similar case.

I understand where you're coming from, but only American libertarians would say this. European libertarians see him as the proof of European liberal parties' utter failure to deliver on their promises of lower taxes, and almost all of them hate the FDP's (and similar parties') love for the EU.

Remarkable in that the entire German political spectrum seems to have come together to hate him for reasons that on the surface at least had nothing to do with his sexuality.

I have some sympathy for Westerwelle due to him being a high-profile politician openly embracing his sexuality. As a party leader and minister he was a freaking joke, though.
