I'd define myself as "a left-of-centre, democratic socio-capitalist, with an underlying ethos that consensus must, wherever possible, triumph over conflict"

I'm left-of-centre, economically; socially, moderate and, on foreign policy, a hawk (but only when diplomacy fails)

Dave

I've been defined by various 'tests' as a Moderate Liberal Populist, an Economic Liberal-Social Moderate and a Libertarian Conservative - the latter of which I very much doubt

I define myself as a progressive populist.

That's right being 0.08 points away from a "perfect" social liberal score, makes you a populist Wink

I'm more liberal on economic than on social issues.

First and foremost, I'm anticorporate.

Libertarian-leaning moderate liberal.  Generally the left end of the DLC being socially liberal and economically center-left.

Doesn't get much better than that.

It's really a shame there aren't many of us in Northeast Philadelphia.  Seriously, the Dems here are generally rah-rah union/anti-trade 24/7 yet are generally more socially conservative than me.  I know some people my age with this ideology and more in Center City and the suburbs, but generally, most people around me are much older and hover around populism.

Well, honestly I can't blame them one bit for economic leftism.  However their social conservatism is repulsive.

It's age and old-school Catholicism.  Trust me the few times I actually go to Mass, hardly anyone under 50 shows up and half the pews are empty.  Even South Boston is this way.  You know who we voted for and Phil can cry all he wants! Smiley

Try your hardest not to bring me/the Catholic Church into your posts. I bet you can't go a day.

Of course when I said conservative, I was joking...

Obviously the answer is Left Leaning Libertarian (in so much that I'm more socially liberal than I am fiscally conservative)

maybe you're just "upbeat"

actually you're old score on that test put you just a hair to my right and a hair below me, but whatever you are, I think I am too.  Ever consider calling yourself a Secular Humanist?

I always thought the term secular humanist denoted someone who was atheistic or agnostic?

Am I correct?

well, I'm certainly no atheist.  I couldn't be a good atheist for the same reason I couldn't be a good catholic.  just not the faithful sort, although I certainly have nothing against organized mono-, poly-, or atheism.

I've never heard the phrase so applied, but it may be used for that too.  no, I'm referring to one of those tests you can take on-line.  some give you numbers (scores), others give you labels.  the political sort.  I think this one was from harvard university.  anyway, I remember being labelled a Secular Humanist by that one.  I've always liked that term better than "liberal" which is what I get on a number of them, including the one on which you got "upbeat"  Anyway I was using the term strictly with regard to politics, not religion.  Secular, in its usual sense, as in Secular Bull Market (in economics), or Secular Determinant (in physics), or Secular Wisdom.  Or Novus Ordo Seclorum, like it says on the back of your one-dollar bill (right under in god we trust)  Humanist as in neither feminist nor masculinist nor socialist nor fascist.  I'll see if I can dig up a link for that test.

I used to describe myself as a Utopian Socialist.  I guess Fabian Socialist might be more accurate.  I'm not sure how I would describy myself in post-19th century terms...."Democratic socialist" seems a bit weak.

Paleo-Conservative, leaning Libertarian on Economic issues, but Populist on Corporative Issues, and a Realist Foreign Policy.

Might make my new sig something like that, which I think is much more accurate than the political compass:

Social: Conservative
Economic: Capitalist
Corporate: Populist
Foreign Policy: Realist
