The guy on the (conservative) Weekly Standard podcast thought that the beatdown of Trump was the biggest beatdown in presidential debate history and looking at it objectively - without the low expectations for Trump clouding perception - I think he was spot on.

I think Trump had the worst general election presidential debate performance in history, but Clinton is unfortunately not charismatic enough for the debates to be the knockout blow, unless Trump has a total meltdown at the town hall or something.

There will be no "knock-out blow" because America is highly polarized and the parties are about the same size. She's not going to get a 10+ point victory unless he does something so disgusting (like call Obama the N-word) that it clearly is outside the realm of possibility.

Seriously, when was the last time some candidate delivered a "knock-out blow" to his opponent during a debate?

I think a better question is: What is a knock-out blow? Would we know it if we saw it?

Christie to Rubio in the last New Hampshire debate.  If Rubio didn't short circuit there, he might have come in second in New Hampshire and gone on to win the nomination.

True

Biden also KO'ed Rudy with the "noun verb 9/11" quip in 2008

In general election debates, we might have to go back to when Dukakis shot himself in the foot when  asked whether he would support the death penalty if his wife were raped and murdered.  That wasn't a shot from his opponent, though.  Lloyd Bentsen's "You're no Jack Kennedy" line would apply too, but that was in a vice presidential debate and Quayle's team won the election.

Yep, I think both 80 and 88 were "knockout blows" in the debates. Ford's "no Soviet domination of Eastern Europe" comment killed his momentum and may have taken any chance of winning away from him even though the final result was still close.

Rubio and Dukakis were self-inflicted wounds and gaffes.
The closest to a knock-out blow by the candidate himself to his opponent was Bentsen's "You are no Jack Kennedy". But even that didn't seem to hurt the Republican ticket much.

IMHO, "Are you better off than you were four years ago?" was a much more devastating quote than that.

Clinton's favorable rating is 45-53 with adults and 43-55 with registered voters, while trumps is far worse. A second good debate from Clinton or disaster from trump will get Clinton close to parity on the favorability question and then the rout will be on

http://abcnews.go.com/Politics/clinton-whomps-debate-reactions-trumps-unfavorability-edges-poll/story?id=42498052

Trump's pre-debate unpopularity had matched its low for the campaign, suggesting the debate may have slowed momentum in his favor. Clinton, for her part, saw a +4 gain in favorability to 45 percent, not large enough to be statistically significant but her best since early August, just after the conventions.

Early August, ABC/WaPo had her +8 in the 4 way and the head to head.

"You're no Jack Kennedy."

Except it was a KO blow in a fight which didn't matter.
