I'm genuinely not sure if that will happen, because many people have had enough of expensive foreign conflicts, whether "cold" or "warm", and by focusing on his detente with Russia, Trump can contrast himself to Hillary and portray her as the "evil neocon warmonger" again, a frame that has been proven successful with many voters. It appeals to non-Republicans too. While his attitude would make for terrible foreign policy, chances are that it is actually a smart talking point electorally.

the problem is with his whole "firebomb" strategy is when he's actually on a stage with Hillary Clinton she doesn't actually look so evil. The perception of Clinton as an evil neocon warmonger only works when she isn't actually on stage with him.

Here Trump is right, Putin and Obama are really on bad terms. Obama insulted Putin in 2014 arrogantly referring to Russia as a weak regional power https://www.theguardian.com/world/2014/mar/25/barack-obama-russia-regional-power-ukraine-weakness
Actually it is Obama who is constantly displaying catastrophic  weakness
